Everybody knows that pagerank is very important for SERPs (Search Engine Result Pages). The question is how important is it? How much does a pagerank help in getting a better position in SERPs? I also don’t know, but I have been doing some studies in this regard.

Its not always that when you do a search and the results shown on the search result page has the higher pagerank website on the top. I have tried many searches and found that many times, you get a result on top which has a lower pagerank rank than the second result. Offcourse the pagerank has some importance in the sort, but not fully. The content and the quality of the page has lot of influence in that. So pagerank is important but not enough to get your page on top without good content. If you have a page with high pagerank without the quality content, it will be taken over by a page which has good content and a pagerank near yours. There are cases which I have seen that a page with good pagerank which give 404Error is on top of the SERPs. It happens, Google might not have crawled after the page started giving error. Pagerank is given according to the importance of the page, checks how much incoming links are there to that page and there are lots of mathematical calculations and algorithms involved in this.

We find lots of webmaster concentrating on creating inbound links to their sites from high pagerank websites and pages. Offcourse its important, but I feel that we should concentrate on creating good content more than trying to trade links. Once you have good content, sites will automatically start linking to you and can gain better pagerank. If you have good pagerank as well as good content, you should get better position SERPs
