Transferring your blog to a new domain

image I just finished transferring this blog from KishoreAsokan.Com to KisAso.com. My old name was too long, so I thought of registering a short name and got this new domain registered last night and just finished transferring my site to the new domain.

Steps I did for this domain Transfer

Downloaded all the files

I used filezilla to download all the files to my local hard drive. It was about 400mb and took about an hour.

Exported the Database

Exported the Database from the phpmyadmin which I use to manage my database

Uploaded the files to the new domain server

Again after downloading the files to my local hard drive, I upload the files to the new server location. It took more time may be the internet speed was less due to traffic, but went very smoothly. I maintained the same directory structure.

Imported the database to the new domains Database.

Again I used phpmyadmin to import the database. I had created a new database and a new user.

Redirected the Old Domain to the news ones.

I maintained the same directory structure so that was not a problem, just added this to the .htaccess file of the old domain

Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule (.*) http://www.newdomain.com/$1 [R=301,L]

Now I do not miss any traffic from search engines or any referral sites. When anybody visits the old link, he is redirected to the new domain

Nice, thanks, I was thinking about moving some sites from Blogger and Wordpress and was unsure of the best way to handle it.
