Managing multiple blogs from a single blog – Wordpress Plugin

by Kishore on July 20, 2009

I am sure, many of us do have more than one blog and we often feel lazy to login to all the blogs and check for pending comments to moderated. I have to check about 5 blogs for comments and other pending posts. I am aware that there are some plugins which can do this, but still I thought of writing one for my need. I just finished the first version, so thought of writing a post about this plugin. This plugin is using ajax, so no page reloads. A;; you need is the URL of the blog and login details to add a site.

Intention of this plugin

To manage multiple blogs from a single blog. You need to install this plugin only to the blog that you would be using as the main blog. You can manage multiple blogs from this blog by using the plugin dash board. You do not need to do any modification on any code or any of the other sites that you would like to manage using this plugin.

Installation

Simple as a regular plugin, just upload to your plugins directory and activate. It creates a database table to store the details of the site that you will be adding to be managed, nothing else.

Usage

Main Page

  1. Loads pending comments of all the blogs that are connected to this plugin. This is the top feature, you can do your approval process with ease without logging to all your blogs and do the comment moderation work. You can delete a comment, reply to a comment, reply to a comment by emailing the author rather than posting a reply on the blog if its personal or not suitable to publish on your blog.
  2. latest 3 post snippet from all the blogs connected

Manage Sites

Every Site will have a link button on the top menu. You can go into details on clicking on this button. You can change the login details, if you have changed your password or you would like to login as a different user. Add new site and even edit the details of the site, which will be needed if you change the login details of the blog or if you want to login as a different user.

Posts View

In this page, you can

  1. View the post
  2. Edit the post (Only Title and Content is currently editable, planning to add, categories, tags and custom fields in future)
  3. View the comments to that particular post

Manage Comments

  1. You can do the following to manage your comments
  2. Change the status of the comment
  3. Delete a comment
  4. Reply to a comment (Will come as threaded comment)
  5. Reply to a comment via email. This is something which I felt is a need. Many times, I get comments which are in pending status and the author would not like the comment to be published

Options Page

I have not added an options page. Once this plugin is ready for public use, I will be adding it. Planned options are

  1. Enable Disable Home Page Widgets
  2. Number of Posts to be displayed on the Posts View Page

Other Information

Browser – Tested only on Google Chrome and Firefox 3.5

Wordpress – 2.8 and above

Pricing – US$ 25 for one blog, can be used to manage any number of blogs. Tested up to 8 blogs. I have done a lot of work, so I feel, I need some compensation to keep this plugin live and update with new features.

Manage Multiple Blogs From a Single Blog

I will be releasing the plugin as soon as I complete all the planned features. Do let me know if you would be interested in buying a plugin like this or would go for free one. Also I would like to hear from you if you expect something more from a plugin like this. I would not really use this for doing new posts, because I use Windows Live writer which can do posts on multiple blog and its an excellent editor. I am trying to add the editor for the blog posting and editing, but have some problems.

Kish,

Any idea why the buttons in the plugin would not do anything when I click on them? I am in WPMU 2.8.4. I have tried in Firefox, safari, opera, chrome, and IE. Same in all sites. Buttons appear in plugin, but clciking on them leads to no response or actions.

David – I have not tested this with Wordpress MU – The problem could be with the MU style of URL which I have not taken care

Ok. I am using custom permalinks. /%postname%/ is the format. In terms of MU there is no sharing yet. Any chance we could paypal you for the development of this for MU?

This would so greatly help me. I really need the ability to see content from one blog on another blog.

I’m having the same problem. I’ve used firefox, safari, ie, and chrome. I’m using v. 2.8.4. I’d be more than happy to paypal for a fix.Matt

also, I’m hosting with hostgator if that matters. I’ve run into a few small chmod probs with them, so who knows if that is important.
