Last night I updated my iPhone with the latest version for iPhone 3G which is free from apple server released on the 17th, June. The upgrade process went very smooth. It took around 50 minutes to download the firmware and installation about 10 minutes. To update, connect your iphone to your pc and itunes will inform you with a message that a new version is available. Just follow the instructions.
New features include, cut, copy and paste (clipboard) across application. The menu of copy paste is good and easy to use. You can even copy images from emails or web pages and paste it to other applications. You can now forward SMS, share contacts through email, I could not find sharing through SMS, but you can do it through MMS. For MMS to start working, you need to update the MMS settings which is under the network settings.
I really liked the search feature which can be used to search from email, contacts, applications, podcasts, music, video, audiobooks, notes, etc which is really helpful and can be customized in the settings. The new voice memo is also useful. You can now set the double click of home button to either of the following – Home, search, phone favorites, camera or ipod, which is good improvement. The stereo bluetooth is also working great, which I have tested with my bluetooth stereo headset. I have tested stereo bluetooth with ipod application and another radio application.
To conclude, installation was smooth, so go ahead and do it, its worth and hopefully you can avoid jailbreak. I really miss is the background application running.
