Teachers Strikes end in Maldives

by Kishore on July 2, 2008

The indefinite strike by the local teachers in Maldives was withdrawn after agreeing to give the Government one month time to come up with a solution. The strike was to increase the salary of the teachers

Finance Minister Gasim said last Sunday said that if the teachers’ salaries were to be increased beginning next August then they would need Rf196 million and that the funds were not available from the current Government budget. He also said that it can only be done by submitting a supplementary budget to the Majlis. However, Minister Gasim has not said whether a supplementary budget would be submitted or not so far.
