Wataniya Telecoms is the first Mobile operator in the Maldives to offer 3G service. With this 3G service, you can make video phone calls, browse the Internet with high speed. The coverage is right now restricted to Male’, the capital of Maldives and nearby islands. I don’t think the service is operational full fledged. I tried using a sim of Wataniya in Male’ but I was not getting the 3G network. Dhiraagu will also soon launch the 3G service soon hopefully as I use a Dhiraagu connection

Wataniya telecoms is another mobile service provider in Maldives. Wataniya has recently introduced a new service called wChat. With this service, Wataniya users can chat on a one-to-one basis or one-to-many in 6 different ‘chat rooms’. Registered wChat users can chat with anyone else in the chatting community at anytime, using their handset. Chat rooms cover a variety of different subjects from friends, jokes, and sport to movies, allowing customers to express their views or share thoughts on common areas of interest.

With the wChat service Wataniya customers can search for and make new friends, choosing whether to chat privately or join in a conversation with a group of other mobile users. A simple SMS of F send to 4141 will give a return SMS showing the wChat customer all his or her online contacts.
