The new President of Maldives President Elect Mohamed Nasheed will be officially start at the Presidential office on the 11th of November 2008. He has decided not to stay at the Presidential Palace, Theemuge, as he had promised to convert that to an University. New cabinet ministers are announced.

There are also rumours that New Maldives team , Dr. Hassan Saeed has quit the MDP led Alliance due to differences over the forming of President elect ‘s cabinet.

The existing President, Gayoom is preparing to leave the office. He is meeting all the top authorities and thanking them for the support they had provided during his term. Yesterday, he even met the Indian High commissioner and the Bangladesh High Commissioner. The transition work is going smooth and is expected to completed as the new Government will be formed on the 11th November.

The citizens of Maldives has very high expectation from the new President. Hope to see some changes very soon.

Mohamed Nasheed popularly known as Anni has been elected as the Next President of Maldives. He has bagged 54.04% of votes as per the provisional results of the Runoff Elections in Maldives.

The runoff elections of the 2008 presidential elections were contested between Dhivehi Rahyithunge Party (DRP) presidential candidate Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) presidential candidate Mohamed Nasheed (Anni). Atolls Minister Ahmed Thasmeen Ali contested the runoff as the running mate of DRP’s candidate. Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik, chairperson of the Maldives National Congress, contested the runoff elections as the running mate of MDP coalition’s candidate.

The election results shows that the people of Maldives were desperately looking for a new President. MDP was backed by all the other contestant who had contested for the first phase of elections.

I was just moving around today as its Friday and Off day for me and took some pictures of the campaigning for the Presidential elections in Maldives. The elections are to happen on the 28th October, just 4 days left. The campaigning is at the peak, you will find interviews, press releases, allegations, going on VTV and DhiTV.

This is the final Run Off elections for the President of Maldives and is very crucial.

MDP campaigning, vehicles and large number of Maldivian citizens are spending lots of time and money for this election, which is the first multi-party election in the history of Maldives.

Presidential Elections in Maldives could not decide the future President of Maldives as none of the candidates could bag more than 50% of the votes. The turnout for the election was historical and was free and fair.

The election commission has declared October 29th 2008 as the election date for the run off polls. The candidates for this election will be President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom of DRP and Mohamed Nasheed of MDP. All the other candidates who had contested for the Presidential election has announced support to the MDP candidate Mohamed Nasheed for the run off polls to bring a change in the ruler who as been the President of the country for the past 30 years. Its very difficult to predict the result of this poll at the this stage. President Gayoom is very confident that he will win the upcoming election with more than 85% votes. What do you feel?

Yesterday, DhiFm conducted an opinion poll for the Presidential Election in Maldives and MDP Mohamed Nasheed bags 44.68%. Are the opinion polls really giving the right picture? Polls conducted by SMS in Maldives may not really give a right picture as there are many reasons. It’s not sure that all the citizens of Maldives are aware of this.

One party can really show a better result if they are informing the Poll information to their supporters and asking everybody to participate in such. Other reason not rely on such kind of polls are the percentage of participants. In this case, only 13265 SMS were received which is just about 5% of the number of voters in Maldives.

Elections for the next President of Maldives will is the most discussed topic among the citizens of Maldives because this is the first multi-partly elections in the history of Maldives. According to the new constitution the elections should be held before October 10th 2008. There are about 8 contestants right now and the for a person to win will need to bag minimum 50% of the votes. In case no body is getting 50% of votes then there will be another election where only two candidates will be there.

The dates for the elections are not yet announced. All the candidates are doing their best in the campaigns. Travelling to different islands, organizing meetings, lots of activities going on. Ramadhan month is coming from the 1st of September and hopefully very soon we will be knowing the date of elections in Maldives.
