Former President of Maldives Ibrahim Nasir has passed away tonight at Singapore after prolonged illness. Maldives has declared a Holiday in respect of the former President. Ibrahim Nasir was become the first President of the Second Republic from 1968 to 1978.

He had done a lot of contribution for the development of Maldives like introducing Television, radio and re establishing the country’s sovereignty, from being a British protectorate to an independent state.

President Nasheed is the first President who got elected democratically. The first round of elections were held on October 8th 2008 in which none of the candidates got the majority. The runoff elections were held on the 28th of October 2008 in which Mohamed Nasheed was elected.

Presidential Elections in Maldives will be held before October 12 this year. President of Maldives, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has started the campaign for the coming election for his Party (DRP) this Friday at Alimas Carnival.
