The new stimulus package from President Obama has created worries for the Indians working in America. According to Troubled Assets Relief Programme (TRAP), the companies who have received the bail out package will have to follow the strict conditions to hire people who are under H-1B visas. According to the new bill the companies will still be able to hire H-1B visa holders, but must comply with the H-1B dependent employer rules which include attesting to actively recruiting American workers; not displacing American workers with H-1B visa holders; and not replacing laid off American workers with foreign workers.
The companies must comply with the H-1B dependent employer rules which include attesting to actively recruiting American workers; not displacing American workers with H-1B visa holders; and not replacing laid off American workers with foreign workers.
This will impact the hiring of Indians especially in the IT sector. There are currently 570,000 Indians who are issued H-B1 visa and other non-immigrant visas.
This bill will certainly effect the Indians working in the US but may not effect the outsourcing of jobs to India. This bill will certainly effect the un-employment in countries India and China expecting many Indians who are working in the US to lose their jobs. But this might have negative impact if they have to be replaced by the un-employed Americans and they will be losing the chances of importing more talented people. Other side of this is that this could bring an end to brain-drain problem because we find great Indians, IITians working in the US.

I thought of compiling some useful information for this purpose in this regard.

There are lots of people who are searching for Medical Jobs, Resort Jobs in Maldives and there are some potential for this. Before taking up a job in Maldives, you should be aware of the working conditions in Maldives, accommodation in Maldives, cost of living, etc. There are many resorts in Maldives, so the chances of getting a job in Hotel Industry is very high if you have the required qualification and experience. There are very high class resorts like Four Seasons, Laanda Giravaaru, Irufushi, One and Only Reethirah, Kanuhura, Bandos, Hilton, W Maldives, Shangri-la and many more new resorts coming up (about 90).

The best way to find a Job in a resort is to browse through the official websites of these resorts and send an email to the Human Resources Department of the Resort. This will be a direct recruitment and you will not need to pay any charges to any recruitment agencies.

I found this interesting website, where there are lots of Jobs Posted Regularly

Please do not contact me for any Jobs, I am not a recruiting agent or don’t work for any recruitment company. I work in Maldives and I share my experience here to help my readers and people who are looking forward to work in Maldives.

Recently Jet and Kingfisher had come to an agreement to avoid competitions. Today Jet Airways terminated around 1000 employees who were on probation from different departments.

They have told that they will be paying one year salary as compensation. The employees were protesting in front of the Jet Airways in Mumbai and were saying that they were informed yesterday that they are terminated and they will get back the deposit of Rs 55000 as deposit and nothing else. Raj Thakhre has threatened Jet Airways that if they don’t take these employees back, no flight of Jet Airways will fly from Mumbai.

The layoff includes crew staff, customer care, almost from all department. Employees told to go home are only who were on probation or unconfirmed staff.

Breaking news is that there are more layoffs coming up. Tata Retail has also announced the layoff of 2500 employees.

I have been working in the Maldives for the past 6 years now. When ever I talk to people when I am in India about Maldives, I find most of them are not aware of this country. I see some advantages for me to work in Maldives rather than any other country like the US or the Gulf countries.

My Employer – I have been working for the same employer since I came to Maldives. I have a really nice employer who always appreciates my work and the freedom given to me at work is something rare. Appraisals are done periodically and we work as a team here. There is no bossing or any kind of harassment at work.

Near to my Home Town – I live in Kerala and there are two flights everyday from Male’ to Trivandrum and one flight to Bangalore every day. I never felt that I am far from my home. I can travel to my home in hours as the flying time is just one hour to Trivandrum and about two hours to Bangalore. I visit India at least 3-4 times a year so I never feel that I am away from my home.

Tax Free Income – There is no tax in Maldives and I have a NRI status in India, so I get all my earnings compared to highly paid professionals in India where they need to pay about 30% as income tax. Now a days the US$ is getting good conversion rate for the Indian Rupees.

These are some advantages of Working in Maldives, but this is not true for all the expatriates working in Maldives. There are different factors which decides the advantages depending upon the employer, which is the key fact and other factors could be the type of contract and the country you are from

Out of this 77,000, about 50% of them are working in the construction industry. There are lots of new construction work going around in Maldives which includes new buildings and new resorts. 12,800 workers in the tourism industry as there are about 90 resorts in Maldives.

Interesting factor is that more than 50% of foreigners working in Maldives are Bangladeshi Nationals and the second comes Indians. There are Nationals from 30 countries working in Maldives. The number of expatriates coming Maldives for work has increased very much in the last two years as there are new projects coming up and lack of skilled professionals in Maldives could be the reason for the employers to look for foreign nationals. Employing foreigners are more expensive as the employer needs to take care of the visa charges, Accommodation, flight tickets, food etc, but for a local the expense is much less.

I get lots of enquiries for getting a Job in Maldives. I have started a new forum for employers and individuals who are interested in working in Maldives. There are lots of employment agents who do the recruitment work, but they charge for this service. If you are an employer and have a vacancy, you can post it in the Jobs Forum. Individuals seeking job in Maldives can also post their Job requirement on this forum. I am not responsible for any of these posts and there is no fees involved in this. Employers can contact the candidates directly and negotiate the deal.

I have been working in Maldives from 2003 for single employer and I really enjoy my job. I find middlemen involved in recruitment these days and the candidate needs to pay huge amount to get a job.

Usually the job vacancies are advertised on news papers and respective website. You should apply directly to the employer rather than getting in hands of these recruiting agents. I would also suggest to take the risk of coming to Maldives personally and attend the interview and talk to the employer directly and clarify the working conditions and salary.

There are about 50,000 expatriates working here in Maldives from more than 50 countries. Scope for jobs in Hotel Industry, Medical profession, teaching profession and other technical jobs are high. Usually the employer takes care of the Food and Accommodation of the employee and pays a fixed salary. Some companies offer overtime and other incentives too. Usually the contract is for one year and the work permit is also issued for 1 year and it depend on the employee and the employer to to decide to whether to renew the contract or not.

I find the employment done directly work well rather than the one’s done through these agents. Recently I came across an individual who had paid a good amount to the agent to get a job and did not get the promised salary. Mostly what happens is that even though they don’t get what is promised, they decide to continue the job as they do not want to go back to their country.

Jobs in Resorts in Maldives

There are about 90 resorts in Maldives and many new resorts coming up. About 50% of the employees in these resorts are foreigners and they are well paid. The biggest advantage in working in resorts is that you get your accommodation and food free and then the salary plus the service charges. Service charges in some some resorts are very high which comes to much more than the fixed salary. Service charge depends on the guest inflow to the resort and I see almost all the resorts in Maldives doing great.

Problems faced by employees

Some of the employers really don’t care about the employees and they do not provide suitable accommodation, salary, medical facilities, leave to their employees. This is not true to all the companies here, but there are some. Usually all the reputed companies and institutions are very particular about the contract and they do what they have promised.

I find getting Jobs directly by applying through emails are bit difficult these days due to the involvement of these middlemen in the Government sector. As I suggested above, if you are really determined to work in Maldives, just try to come to Maldives and secure your job and come back in a employment visa.

Please do not send any emails to me for jobs in Maldives as I am not into this profession. I had done posts for jobs for my official purpose and I have got the candidates. If any new vacancies come up, I will surely posting the requirement here.

I am not in a position to give the contact details of all the resorts now. I will surely post if I come across any vacancies.
There are more than 1000 foreign teachers working here in Maldives. There are lots of schools in Maldives and the number of vacancies are very high. You may have to work in some remote islands, and if you are lucky, you may get a job in Male’ , the capital of Maldives. If you are working in Male’, you can earn good by taking tutions. Majority of the teachers earn, 2-3 times the amount they get as their fixed salary. In islands, you do not get this earnings, but you will be getting island allowance, which does not really compensate the income from tutions

There are a lot of requirement in construction field as there are lots of new projects coming up and existing projects. Lots of new multi-storied buildings coming up, so the chances for job in this field are high. There are lots of construction companies in Maldives
