Obama said

“This coming Saturday, Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and some Buddhists, here in America and around the world, will celebrate this holiday by lighting Diyas, or lamps, which symbolize the victory of light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance… And in that spirit of celebration and contemplation, I am happy to light the White House Diya, and wish you all a Happy Diwali, and a Saal Mubarak.”

President Obama has created history of becoming the first President of America to lit a Diwali lamp at the White House recognizing this popular festival of Hindus, Sikhs and Jains around the World and greeting them on the occasion of Diwali.

Diwali is known as the “festival of lights” and prevails “good over evil”. For Diwali, we usually clean our house, wear new cloths, prepare special dishes, light lamps (diyas), perform Lekshmi Pooja, exchange gifts and finally “Fireworks”.

As a kid, Diwali always meant Crackers to me, but now, I am held back thinking about the consequences of these fireworks.

Just look at these statistics even though its of few years back

Source: CSC India

The pollution is growing so high and these fireworks create a lot of health issues. People who are having respiratory problems trend to aggravate and suffer during and after this Festival. We should try to minimize the use of fireworks and care about the people who get into trouble because of this festive activity. Karnataka state pollution control board has already taken some measures to educate people to go environment friendly this Diwali and celebrate Diwali with lamps and light and avoid any causes of pollution.

Its not just the air pollution, but a lot of noise pollution happens during Diwali. I would request people celebrating Diwali with crackers to think about others who would be suffering due to your act.

Happy Diwali – Please go Environment Friendly

Ramadan is the most important festival in Maldives and this is my 6th Ramadan Month in Maldives. During Ramadan things go very different. All the citizens of Maldives fast for 30 days during the day time. Lots of special dishes are made, new dresses, household articles are purchased. You will find lots of events happening during Ramadan month, special offers, Dhiraagu Ramdan Offer, Electronics products, and many other offers around Male’.

All the offices work for less hours during Ramadan in Maldives as most of Maldivians will be fasting. Hotels don’t open during fasting time, which causes difficulty for people who don’t fast and don’t cook at home. During Ramadan Fast breaking is organised in different places like hotels and restaurants and at home.

Today is the first day of Ramadan Month and I wish all the Maldivians “Ramadan Mubarak”
