Create multiple 125 x 125 Image Ads for your blog using Google Ad Manager

I just finished setting up my ads for this blog using Google Ad Manager. Its very simple, and I would like to share this with my readers.

First you need to activate your Google Ad Manager Account, every Google Adsense account has Google Ad Manager enabled by default now, so just login to your Ad Manager Account.

Create Your Ad Slots

Suppose your are planning to to display 4 125 x 125 px image ads, you need to create 4 Ad-slots. For this you need to go to the inventory tab of your Ad Manager and click on “Create New Ad Slot”. Give a name like I have given the name “Asokans_125×125_1” for my first Ad Slot. You can give any name which is meaningful. Please note that there should not be any space in the Ad Slot name. Next select the size as 125 x 125 , next you should uncheck the Adsense Ads. You should also enter a description for the Ad Slot.

Follow the same procedure and create another 3 Ad Slots in the similar way, namely, Asokans_125×125_1Asokans_125×125_2, Asokans_125×125_3, Asokans_125×125_4 with the same settings, except the description.

Now you need to create the Ad Placement for these Ad Slots

Create Placements

Now go to the placement tab and click on New Placement. Enter a name for the placement, like Image_125×125. Make sure that you add all the 4 Ad Slots to this placement.

Now are done with the Ad slots and the placement for the multiple ad widget. Next you need to create the order for these Ad Slots.

Create Order for Ad Placement

Click on new network order and enter the details like the name. You can set the delivery time to unlimited and the price also to unlimited. Now you need to select the placement that you have created to this order. You can also set targeting conditions for the order. Next you need to save the order and activate it.

Create Creatives for your Orders

Next step is to create creatives for the order. Creatives are the real advertisements where we either enter the rich media code or the image url and the final destination url. Click on the creatives links and enter a name for the creative. You can enter the ad name, the size, and the ad type needs to be selected and saved. In this way you can create un-limited creatives for your order. Now you are almost done. Make sure that you create at-least 4 creatives.

Generate HTML Code

Final step to be done with the Google Ad Manager is to generate the code. Go to Inventory->Ad Slots and click on the Generate HTML code. You need to select all the 4 Ad Slots and click on the Generate code button. Now you have the code ready to be inserted to your web page.

The first part is the code which needs to be inserted inside the tag.

Next you need to insert the code, which needs to at the place where you want to display the widget, which is probably the sidebar. You can open the sidebar.php file of your wordpress template and insert this code.

You need to add this CSS style to your template style sheet.

Now you need to insert the code to the location in the sidebar where you need to display your Ads

You are done. You may need to wait for sometime for the ads to start serving.

Google Ad manager for all Adsense users

Google yesterday announced that Google Ad Manager is enabled for all Google Adsense users. Earlier Ad Manager was only open through invitation. Google ad manager is useful if you are selling ads directly to your advertisers. The advantage is that if you do not have any ads booked for a particular slot or if the advertisement booked is expired then Google Adsense Ads will be displayed automatically if you enable this feature. Other biggest advantage is that you will be using a hosted ad manager on the Google server which should me reliable and your server does not need to bear the load of traffic. I had been using OpenX for a while but this was really slowing down my site. Now I am using Google Ad Manager as I had got an invitation for this earlier in March 2008.

Google Adsense Certificate Issue

I just downloaded the latest version of Firefox and was using it. I went to the Google Adsense website to check the stats and the first message that I got was

This shows that the certificate used is for Google.com, then I went ahead

I thing Google should sort this issue out

Google Adsense New Improved Custom Search for better earnings

Google Adsense has an option for earning from the search results other than banners and text links. I am not sure how many of us use it and what is the potential of earning from the Google Adsense search. To be frank, I was using this only on one of my blog and I did not get much revenue from this. Today I received an email from Google Adsense support team encouraging the use of the Search feature.

There are many new features that they have added and I feel that everybody should try this.

Searching without leaving your website
Improved indexing of your pages
You can add up all your network sites to be searched for the results
You can refine the searches with keywords
You can select the page where the search results to be shown
You can select the ad location where the Google Adsense results to be shown

You should NOT

Add predefined words in the search box
you should not create links to lead to search results
You should not use any automated search quires to show results

Two Image Ads shows same ads with different sizes – Google Adsense

I have been using two ad slots with Image ads on a page with Google Adsense. I see most of the time that the ad served is for the same product. For example you have 4 placements (Maximum allowed according to the Google Adsense TOS). Two text ads and two image ads of different sizes. Mostly the two image ads displayed are of the same product. Have you ever seen this kind of problem?

Google Affiliate network to replace Google Adsense Referral program

I got an email from the Google Adsense Team saying that the Google is discontinuing the Referral program from August end. Instead we can sign up for the Google Affiliate network which is actually the Google acquired company, Doubleclick.

I am not at all worried as I do not use the referral products on any of my blog now as I tried and was not working well for me. If you are using referral code, just start removing it as it will not work after August end. If you are using in templates it should not be a problem but if you have used for individual pages, then it should be a tough time for you.

In the affiliate network you will not be paid for impressions or clicks, but only for conversions according the rates set by the advertisers. Depending upon the kind of visitors that you will be getting you will earn or there is no point wasting your space for this kind of program.

Monetize your video posts with Blip.TV

I recently created an account with blip tv for uploading videos of my travel. I find the uploading process very simple and fast. Interesting part of this video hosting site is that you get paid for the advertisments which are displayed along with your videos.

How to start off

Just go to Blip.tv and register for a free account. Once you complete the registration, you can start uploading your videos.

Go to the advertisement link and update your preferences.

You also will need to update your payment info. You can get your payments via paypal or by cheque.

I am not aware about the earning potential of this program, but will keep you updated in my future posts. I have tried Revver but the earnings are not much. This may be because the views are also very less and you need to get good number views and clicks for good earning. In Revver the advertisements are served by Google Adsense and in Blip TV, I have seen ads from Google Adsense as well as other ones. Most appreciated point about blip TV is the quality of the video as well as other features like cross posting to your blog directly when you upload the video. Upload video is very simple and they have provided special upload tools as well. You can even FTP your videos to blip TV and the file name becomes the title of the video. If you are lucky enough to get your video popular and gets listed on the front page, you can earn more that US$ 2000 per month.

Will Google Adsense Work for your blog?

This is a question which I have been asking myself and analyzing the revenue income from Google Adsense. I have been using Google Adsense for this blog and studying the income using the channel feature of Google Adsense. I use Google Adsense for 13 different website and I did a detailed study on the income from my different websites.

In my case Google Adsense does not work well for this blog. I get more traffic and even I have got good loyal visitors, but the clicks on this blog is very low when comparing the CTR with other websites . I have about 185 Feed subscribers which I do not have on any of my other websites, but still the clicks generated on this blog is low when looking into the impressions and traffic of this blog.

What could be the reason?

Visibility and blending of ads – The ads are placed well and well blended according to my knowledge and experience. I have used the right color and placed above the content as well as the sidebars.

Possible reasons

Do you own a blog? If yes, do you use Google Adsense? If yes, do you click on Google ads on other blogs or websites?

If I am to answer, I say NO, I very rarely click on other blogs Google Ads.

Reason – I am very scared to click on Google Ads as I do not even want to click on those and I have made an habit to always stay away from these ads. I know that I do have any problem clicking on Ads on other sites or blogs, but I am not willing to develop the habit of click on Google Ads. If I do that often, I am scared that I may click on the Google Ads on my blog too and I do not want to get my google adsense account banned.

Now how is this related to my blog Adsense CTR?

Most of my blog visitors are blog owners or bloggers who want to make money online. I do write only on this topic on this blog. Most of the visitors know what Google Adsense is and they do not want to click on these ads. I had run Google Adwords campaign two months back for about two months and my Google Adsense revenue was very high. I was getting most of the visitors who came clicking on a Google Ads and come to my blog go through some pages and again they click on one of the Google Adsense ads which they find on my blog and they go to the Advertiser’s web page. These visitors may not really know what Google Adsense is and they don’t know if this is an ad severed by Google.

My other websites, which are on different topic like web directories, Online Encyclopedia, has very good CTR. The type of visitors on these websites are different from those I get on this blog. They are on an aim to find what they want and they do not hesitate to click any link which has a title that is similar to what they are looking for. So I get a better CTR on these websites.

I am sure that most of you who own a blog with Google Adsense, will be very hesitant to click on Google Adsense Ads even on other websites. Am I right, your comments are anticipated

Overriding the default Adsense setting in Google Ad Manager

I got an invitation for Google Admanager few days back and was just going through the features before using it. I had tough time working on the the default Google Adsense settings. Google Admanager has a feature of showing Google Adsense ads if you have linked one for the slots which are free or even compete with the booked ads. Right now the user does not have the feature to modify the Adsense attributes like the link color or the border color as we can do for individual ads in Google Adsense control panel. But we can do it by using from Javascript provided on the help page of Google Ad Manager.

As per the information given on the help page is added the code, but was not working. You can see the code info below

According to the help page as you see above, I inserted the code as given below

But this was not working, and spend a lot of time and even posted a help request at Google Groups for Ad manager

Later I was going through some some other help pages for tagging, I came across this information about tagging and in that the attribute is GA_googleAddAdSenseSlotAttr instead of GA_googleAdAdSenseSlotAttr and when I corrected the code according to this it is working fine.

Now let me explain you how to use the attributes to override the default adsense settings. When you login to the Ad Manager and go to the inventory tab, you can find the Default Adsense setting link. In this you can set your default adsense properties, but there is no option to set properties for individual solts or placements adsense properties.

But you can override the default adsense properties in the Ad Manager in two levels

Page Level
Slot Level

For setting the page level properties, you have to add the following code to change the property which will be applicable on a page level basis, all the slots will be effected

and for Slot level modification you need to add

GA_googleAddAdSenseSlotAttr("slotname", "param", "value");

What are the properties that you can override?

Border: param = google_color_border
Title: param = google_color_link
Background: param = google_color_bg

Alternate ad URL: param = google_alternate_ad_url
Ad unit (text, image, text/image): param = google_ad_type
Corner style: param = google_ui_features

Now its working great. Google Help centre needs to correct the information given on their help page

Google Adsense Vs Private sales of Ads

Revenue generation from your blog will be your ultimate aim if you are running a blog for money. I have discussed about earning through blogging in my previous posts and different sources of revenue for your blog. How much can you earn from a blog is a question which had different answer for different bloggers depending upon the traffic of the blog and kind of traffic you have.

Google Adsense is the most widely source of advertising tool by most of blogger. But when they start getting sufficient revenue from private sales of ads, they avoid Google Adsense for many reasons. I have noticed that blogger like Darren Rowse, John Chow do not use Google Adsense these days. They started their earning from Google Adsense but now they get very high income from their private sales of Ads and almost all the ad slots are over booked.

Which one should you choose?

I got an invitation for Google Ad manager recently and was just trying to do the settings. I have not yet started using it as I really do not need it. It is has good features, but its not helping me much. I use Google Adsense more on this blog not because I earn more from Google Adsense, but I do not have any private advertiser yet who pays me more than Google Adsense.

Bloggers like Amit Agrawal earns more than US$ 1000 from Google Adsense, so why should we think that earning potential in Google Adsense is less, but Amit’s blog has millions of page views every month, so we cannot expect a big revenue from Google Adsense. Another problem that can happen to your advertising revenue is if your Google Adsense account is banned, what will be your source of revenue if you solely depend on Google Adsense.

My Strategy

I use Google Adsense, and I am trying to get some private advertisers, not looking into the rates much for now. I can offer good discounted price and I have good number or Feed readers now. As my blog statistics improves, I may get good advertisers and good revenue from private sales of Ads.

Other possible revenue is from Affiliate programs and other advertising sites like CJ, Amazon, etc, but all needs conversion and you may not earn anything in the beginning. I also offer paid reviews complying with the Google Webmaster guidelines

So to conclude, Google Adsense can play an important role in your blog’s revenue, stick to it and as your blog traffic grows, you can try for private sales of ads
