Onam is celebrated in Kerala and mostly celebrated all over the world since Keralites are everywhere. It is the festival which welcomes the harvest season in Kerala. There is a myth related to the Onam. There was a King (Asura) named Mahabali and he was so kind and generous. Who ever asked anything to him was granted. He became so popular and Devas became so jealous and wanted to get rid of him. They made a plan and Mahavishnu disguised himself as a Brahmin boy named Vamana and went to ask him to give 3 feet of land. Mahabali has given permission to take 3 feet by his own. Vamana became so happy and turned to be a gigantic figure, started measuring the whole earth in one foot, sky in the second foot and no place was left for the 3rd foot and Vamana desperately looked at Mahabali by keeping his foot lifted and immediately Mahabali bowed his head under the foot. Vamana pressed him down and believed that Mahabali has gone to Paathalam. Before leaving earth Mahabali asked Vamana for granting him permission to visit his subjects in Kerala once in a year, that is on the Thiruvonam day. When he visits we people have to make sure that we are living the same way as we were living when he was ruling. So we prepare lot of dishes, wear new dresses etc..
