Last week I got an O2 Zinc, a PDA from O2. Its a new products, with windows mobile 5. I was using O2 Atom for the past 1 year. I have an habit of changing my phone once a year. The first PDA I used was a HP Ipaq 6500. It was a good experience migrating from a simple Panasonic Phone to a PDA. For the past 3 years I am using PDA and very much adjusted with that.
Using PDA just for the sake of showing off is the general tread. In fact less than 40% of people who use PDA make use of 60% of features of a PDA.O2 Zinc has a good look (Man), its bit bigger than O2 Atom. In fact I feel the O2 Atom was a flop and the users did not a fair value of the money spent, including me. I had got it last year (Jan 2006) and used it till last week. Did more than 5 Rom Updates, still have some more problems. O2 Atom is no more available, but instead O2 Atom Exec is there which is rectified of these problems. The never ending problem which I faced with O2 Atom was the person talking to me on the other end used to get the echo of his own sound and its really annoying, but otherwise, everything else was fine after the last rom update.
Regarding O2 Zinc, its looks are excellent, camera 2.0 megapixels and really good. The battery life is almost the same as what I used to get from my previous Atom. I get less battery life because I am always connected via GPRS as I use the Push Mail system to get all my emails pushed to my Pocket PC. The biggest advantage of Window Mobile 5 is that the Push technology. I have an account (free) at mail2web.com and when I need to hard reset, I don’t need to take a backup or be worried about my mails or contacts or appointments. As soon as I hard reset, I configure my mail2web server details and it synchronises all my contacts, appointments, tasks and emails.
One major change in O2 Zinc is that it has a QWERTY keyboard, which I hardly use because I am used to the touch screen and was using it for the past 3 years. The processor is better, 520 MHz Intel Xscale PXA 270 processor. I don’t really feel any change in speed, but the configuration is better in figures. Its shipped with a software to backup your SMS which is very useful.
I found some bugs in the software
The time-zone settings changes to -8 US automatically, which can be solved by setting the visiting time zone same as the home time zone
