Age Correspondent New Delhi Oct. 16: The Indian Navy will soon conduct a fresh round of coordinated patrols with Southeast Asian navies, such as the Indonesian and Thai navies, to combat maritime crimes such as piracy and drug-trafficking. In addition to this, the Indian Navy will also be deploying a Dornier (reconnaissance) aircraft in the Maldives (situated close to India’s southern shores) from October 18 to 23 to carry out aerial patrolling of the Indian Ocean on the request of that country. The essence of coordinated patrols is that each Navy patrols in its own territorial waters while passing on any information — on illegal activities detected — to the other Navy. India has been conducting coordinated patrols with south-east Asian navies for the past few years following rampant piracy in the vital Straits of Malacca.
