Maldives is not a safe place – Expatriate Workers Beware

by Kishore on July 4, 2009

drug_addicts_maldives I had written a post about the safety of Expatriates working in Maldives about six months back and Today a shocking incident made me write this post just after returning back from ADK hospital. One of my colleague gave me a call at 8pm tonight saying that one drug addict got into his house when he was at work and beat up his wife and his elder son. His younger one got scared locked himself in the bathroom so he escaped unhurt (Incident happened in Villingili, island near to Male’, police case reported). His wife was severely beaten up and head hit the floor. This guy bit her finger and she suffered multiple injuries. She started screaming which was heard by a local person who came to rescue them. He was also hit by this drug addict and he ran out to escape. He got into a mosque nearby where he was caught and handed over to the police.

The victim had serious injury on her head after her head was banged on the floor and had to be taken to ADK to take a CT and X-rays. Luckily things are fine now. My concern is the safety of the people living here. I am sure, there will be no action taken nor none of the media will report this incident. The country is flooded with drug addicts and common people are the victims of these drug addicts (including the locals). I don’t see any action take by the Government of Maldives. These kind of incidents are becoming very common these days. These drug addicts go violent to get  their next dose of drug and they may do anything to get it.

Infact my experience with the locals has been good. Most of them do respect the foreigners working here, but these drug addicts prefer to target the foreigners for reasons like, they don’t respond or retaliate and they can be scared more easily. If they try to do the same with locals, they get caught and beaten up. The pettiest part if from the police. Even if they catch a culprit we will see him released in hours or in a day. They don’t fear the police and many times these incident happens in front of a police constable. These attacks are done mostly on Bangladeshi’s and Indians and I wonder what the Indian commission is doing here. Anyway this incident will be reported to the Indian High Commission in Maldives and would see, what they do?

Many expatriates are now leaving their jobs due to these reasons. If you are living in Maldives, be prepared for such incidents and if you are planning to come to Maldives to join a   new job, be aware of the situation here. MALDIVES IS NO LONGER A VERY SAFE PLACE, atleast to expatriates working here.

Today we met the First Secretary of the Indian High commissioner of India and submitted a request to take up this matter with the Government of Maldives. We had a detailed discussion on this issue and were assured that they will be taking up this issue with the Maldives Police and the Home Ministry. According to him, such kind of problems are very common.
But to be frank, I understand that this problem is not something which can be solved overnight. The culprit taken by the police was left free for that reason that he was a person with mental problems. If he has mental problems, he should not be left free like this. He should be be given proper treatment and somebody to take the responsibility for such incidents.

Artificial beach is targeted area by pick pocketers and robbers. Surprising in the evening, this is the area which is having less light…. There should be more light on the roads and the garden areas.

I dont understand why Indian and Pakistani doctors are coming to Maldives to work .This is not a place to work. This place is not safe at all .These days the problem of drug addicts is getting worse day by day, particularly in the capital and some southern islands .This drug problem has become a noticeble factor in most of the islands of Maldives.Your life is not safe at all.The local police also does not take any actions against these culprits.Doctors are most vulnerable. The working conditions of doctors under Ministry Of health is really pathetic .They are being exploited and harrassed by hospital administrations in the name of shortage of funds. They are being denied their over time ,though it is permissible as per their contract. For hospital adminstration the contract does not carry any meaning. The new commers suffer the most .They will be denied basic aminities .They will be harrassed like anything. If they raise their voice they will be humiliated and rebuked very badly .The poor doctor cant do anything as his passport is in the custody of ministry of health.I have seen some doctors going to brink of mental breakdown due to harrassing attitude of the hospital administration.I dont know whether the Ministry of health is aware of this problem or not.The most disturbing part is that these poor doctors get trapped by their agents in India and Pakistan who give a very rosy picture of this country, as they get heavy cut once the doctor lands at Male.I have been informed by someof the new commers[newly joined doctors] that even those doctors who are already working here misleads these new commers so that their exit from this country become easy. Its a well known fact that ministry does not leave a doctor unless it get a fresh recruit to replace him. Its my suggestion dont get trapped here for Rs 80000-90000 you work anywhere but dont come to this country, it is a hell.
