Maldives not safe place for expatriates

Attack on Expatriates working in Maldives is on rise these days. Such attacks are giving a feeling that Maldives is not a safe place for work these days. This incident happened at Maalhendhoo where a school principal was attacked and badly injured. There could be some reasons for this, but the nothing is revealed yet. The attackers threw coconuts, pieces of wood and rocks which badly hurt Mr Antony AK who is in Male’ for treatment.

Naryan Swamy, first secretary at the Indian High Commission, told Minivan News today that the increasing number of attacks on Indian expatriates in the past two to three years was a grave concern.
“Security is the most important concern,” he said. “A lot of good doctors and good teachers are going away because of security concerns.”
He added the commission had received complaints of humiliation, threats and robbery.
In the case of teachers who discipline students on orders from the supervisors, he said, students sometimes threatened violence.
In May, an Indian teacher was attacked in Addu atoll Feydhoo. A gang of four people hit the teacher over the head with a lob of wood.
In another case in Addu, the departure of an Indian gynecologist left the regional hospital without a specialist for 15 days, he said.
“Pregnant women had to be taken to Fuahmulah to give birth,” he said. “This is not good. It is the Maldivian community that suffer in such cases.”
Swamy said Maldivians by and large were friendly and non-violent and it was only certain elements in society that were attacking foreigners.
The High Commission had taken up the matter with the authorities, he continued, including the home ministry and the president himself.
“We hope the government will take this seriously and protect expatriates in the Maldives,” he said.

There are lots of such attacks remains unnoticed. I had personally met Mr Naryan Swamy to discuss about a similar incident, some enquiries were done, but still things like keep happening. Hope such kind of actions are condemned by responsible people of Maldives and take necessary actions against such elements.
