You should have a theme which matches the topic of your blog. Looks of your blog is taken care by the theme that you use. There are many themes that are available free, but I would recommend to go for a Professional theme which is well suited for you. Before selecting a theme, you should check for the following

1. Compatible with the latest version of WordPress – Its very important that the theme that you use is compatible with the latest version of Wordpess
2. Search Engine Friendly – Most of the themes are SEO friendly, but its always better to check if the SEO part is taken care
3. Well optimized – Too much of features and DB calls may not load your website in full pace. Fast loading of pages is very important.
4. Customizable – If you have an options page for your theme where you can do your customization, then it would be helpful for you to do necessary changes without playing with the theme code.
5. Widgets Enabled – Now a days, most of the themes are Widget Enabled, but just check if your theme is up to date.
6. Layout - There are two popular type of themes available, like the Magazine style and the regular blog style.
