I am a big fan of PAP which has released its latest version with great features (PAP 4) . People who do not know what PAP or Post affiliate Pro is, let me tell you, its a great tool to manage your affiliate program. It has everything that you will need to run your affiliate program.
Now let me tell you the good news. PAP 4 has API support, which help developers to write custom tools to integrate with other CMS or tools. I wrote a plugin for WordPress which connects to a PAP 4 installation to manage my affiliates who get paid for writing articles. This plugin manages sign-ups, takes care of posts published, which means that when an author submits an article, a sale is created with pending status and when the article is published after moderation by an assigned moderator, the sale is approved automatically. I have written some widgets which takes care of some tracking.
This plugin is purely written for my use, but I have put for public download, which can be used for free by anybody. If anybody needs a custom plugin, I can write it for them (I do charge for that).

To the topic – I wrote this plugin and I got some visitors who were interested in getting a custom plugin written for them. I got paid well for the work I had done. Other gain for me is the sales that I generated for PAP 4. I got some new customers for PAP 4 and got my affiliate commission. I am sure, no one will regret buying PAP 4 as its strong, robust and tested. Great support by the vendors.
