Maintaining a blog is not something new but like once you have an email ID. More and more internet users are getting into blogging. Starting a new blog is very simple, just sign-up for a free account with any blog service provider like WordPress, Blogger, etc or register a domain and have your own branded blog.
Now coming to the topic of this post, what is the topic on which you will be blogging, is it something that you do everyday like MattCutts blogs about his work with Google, Darren blogs on Blogging tips, or something which comes to your mind which means that your blog will not be on a particular topic. There are many disadvantages and advantages in both the cases.
Multiple Topic Blog
When you blog on multiple topic there are some disadvantages, but its very easy to write about things that come across in your day to day life.
Disadvantages for Blogs with Multiple Topics
- Search Engines – If your blog focuses on particular topic, then the chances of getting high ranking on search engines are more. Your post will be ranked higher on a niche topic that your blog is focusing on. But in the case of a blog where you write about technology, photography, shopping, health, etc, then you do not get authority on any of the topics
- Email or Feed subscribers – The chances of your subscribers to unsubscribe is very high, because a visitor interested in photography may not be interested in reading your posts on health
- Advertising – If you have a blog which has articles on multiple topic, your have a negative point as far as advertisers are concerned. You may have visitors with different interest. In case a camera manufacturer wants to advertise on your blog, he may think twice because you have some readers who are interested in photography and some in other topics. I find Adsense showing ads which are not really related to the post when I write a new post on a very different topic. Check out the picture above, I have written a post on Search engine and its displaying ads related to resorts in Maldives. This is because I have more posts on Maldives on my blog.
Advantages for Blogs with Multiple Topics
- Easy to come up with new posts – You do not need to wait for something triggering to write a new post, but you can write about anything and everything on your blog as your blog is not limited to a certain category.
- Can share personal views – You can write things about your personal experience
- More personal readers – You may get your friends and family members reading your blog posts
To conclude, blogging is something interesting, you can start a blog with ease, decide what you want to blog about if you are planning to make money about blogging. Blogging on topics which are searched by more and more people, you will get more readers. I would not say that if you blog on multiple topics, you are going to losing something, but I feel blogs focusing on particular topic has more points to score.
