Google Adsense is a very tricky PPC program. A small difference will change your stats and I experienced it recently. After switching over to a new theme, I saw a drastic fall in my CTR and earnings of Google Adsense. It went down by 50% and I was really shocked. After a lot of experimentation, I got my earning rate more than what I was getting before and I could learn a lot from this and would like to share that here.
Ad placement and blending has lots of influence in getting the visitor to click on the ads. Other very important factor is the type of ads and the content of the page. Some keywords are very highly paid and some are very low. Recently I noticed that just one click paid me US$ 5.00 which was really surprising for me. I usually used to get between US$ 0.05 to 0.015 per click. If you have a blog with keywords which are very highly paid, then the chances of earning are more.
Blending of Google Adsense Ads
Blending ads to the theme style is good and improves the CTR, but I would like to say that you need to experiment. There is no standard rule that if you blend the Ads, exactly like your theme style, you will get good number of clicks. For me, I found the ad units blended with my theme was not working well as its working now which is not the exact style of my theme.

Placement of Adsense Ad Slots and Ad Size
Very Important factor – I placed the 336 x 280 size text ads above my post content and below the title of the post which worked very well for me. Earlier I had the 468 x 60 size ad, which was not performing well for me.

Again I would like to stress that you need to do lots of experiments with the above to find which works the best for you. It has worked well for me, but could be that it may not work well for you. Please make sure that you use this program following the Terms of Services of Google Adsense and never try any shortcut method to get your ads clicked, you will be in trouble.
