Tabala maestro, Ustad Zakir Hussain, has won Grammy in the Comtemporary World Music Album category for his collaborative album “Global Drum Project”. Hussain worked with Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart, Nigerian percussionist Sikiru Adepoju and Puerto Rican jazz percussionist Giovanni Hidalgo for the album. This is the second Grammy award for Zakir, who received the first-ever Grammy for Best World Music Album for his “Planet Drum” in 1991, which was also a collaborative work. According to him, collaborating with western artistes makes it easier, in a way, to get recognition.
He is the only second Indian, next to Pandit Ravi Shankar, to win Grammy twice, but he remains modest about his achievement. He appreciates more the blessings of his father and guru, the late Ustad Allah Rakha, than awards.
Though he has achieved fame and glory across the boundaries, his unfulfilled dream is to win a Grammy for an album that has pure Indian classical music.
Hopefully 2009 will be the year of Indian music.
