There are many free directories like Google Directory or Dmoz and some are paid ones like Yahoo Directory.
Why do you need to submit your site to different directories?
When you have a new site, you need to first indexed by Google or other search engines. The best way to get indexed is get some links from sites which are already indexed. Submitting your site to which has high ranking will surely increase your sites visibility as well as the Pagerank also gets better. But getting your site approved for listing is not that easy. There are many websites offering services for submitting your sites in multiple directories, but I have never tried it. For this you need to do some payment, you can try if you are interested, but I would advice to submit your sites manually in selected Directories.
